Ms. Turner created a very large number of golf images for the golf market in the 1990s. The Scorecard Prints were sold internationally. Many prints were custom painted for specific golf clubs (Camelback, Oakmont, Pebble Beach) and for corporate outings. Individual golfers could pencil in their name(s), score, date and golf club location.
Autographs of famous golfers were collected by her husband, Master Profession, J.D. Turner. Ms. Turner painted watercolor portraits of Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones, Glenna Collette, Babe Zaharias, Tom Morris, Ted Ray, James Braid, Harry Vardon, J.H. Taylor, Francis Ouimet. She framed their autographs with their portraits. With Gene Sarazen and Patty Berg, large (22”x30”) original watercolors were created documenting their careers and individually signed on the paintings and on the prints.
Watercolor has been the basis of artist Brenda Turner’s work. She is most at home using gouache or acrylic paints on toned paper. Often a pentimenti, where loose under painting is retained in the final stage, is evident in her handling of water based oils or acrylics. She frequently addresses figurative themes relying on flat shapes, strong design, and color considerations for her compositions. Drawing and line are central to her art. To that end she regularly attends live figure drawing classes. Currently Ms. Turner’s oil and acrylic paintings are generated from compositional studies in her studio on Shipyard Road in Savannah, Ga. “Artists I find most interesting are Deibenkorn for compositional shapes, Matisse for color and line, Hockney for his quirky sensibility, and Santa Fe artist, Jamie Chase, for his block presentation of figures.”
Brenda's paintings have been judged into over 80 national or regional water media competitions, garnering awards in a third of the shows and Best of Show in a national and try-state show. Her gouache paintings were featured in an 8 page article in American Artist magazine in 2007 and referenced again there in April 2012. Watercolor magazine celebrated her painting, "In Between Time”, as one of the 27 standout paintings of the year in The Best of Art of 2015.
The artist received a B.A. in art education and a M.A. in studio drawing and painting from the University of Iowa. A strong grounding in art history and an art history thesis were required for her Master of Arts degree. Ms. Turner taught art in public and university schools, in an art museum school, and in community college classes. She has conducted workshops in watercolor, drawing, and screen printing. Ms. Turner holds a permanent professional teaching certificate from the state of Iowa. She produced over 25,000 prints for the golf market in the 1990’s. Many of her current images are available in limited giclee print form. Brenda and her husband, J.D. Turner, live on Skidaway Island, in Savannah, Ga.
